Not all that much one can say about a 70% Latakia blend, but the real coolness of this is in the presentation. It gets better and better with time. I got this as a sample and was not sure I liked it at first but I found that after smoking it several times it began to grow on me. I have started using the cigar cutter method of preparation (As shown on the SPC blog) and find that it makes the smoke quite a bit smoother. Also this blend delivered the most pleasant aroma of any tobacco I've lit up before, and always gets me comin g back for more. This is a good blend if you really want to know what "Latakia Forward" means. The Krumble Kake cut adds tremendously to this blend. The components come together quite nicely and gives a nice load of nicotine in this offering from C&D. I like Latikia, but this may be just a bit over the top for me. As subtle as a cannon shot full o' nails and cast iron! That is not a latakia bomb nor a full strength smoke in my opinion. How ever you choose to consume it, PK is a GREAT blend. This tobacco has the same taste, until it all gone, unlike some tobacco's that after half the bowl is gone then you get an ashy burnt like taste. Pirate Kake does have a rich smoky flavor, but it lacks the compelling subtleties of blends like Odyssey, Penzance and Lagonda. While the cavendish cut burley does not contribute to the taste in any way, it gives this blend a smooth, cool and even burn. Thought a pirate would enjoy a smoke with more kick. As everyone here says, its definitely a whim smoke (not your regular) and for the latkia fans. I love the presentation, two little coal black bricks of latakia doom. Its a great product. All the reviews are very complete, so I will just add my few points. It sounds awful, but it wasn't. MY GOSH! If you're looking for a better Latikia Bomb, check out Captain Earl's Stimulus Package or his Ten Russians. There are too many others which I enjoy more. Other than that, I believe this to be the perfect blend for true lover's of Latakia, it showcases the rich, velvety, smokey, slightly sweet, delectability of Latakia, while offering a robust, yet silky smooth, full smoking experience. I will look forward to trying the other tin after much aging hopefully mellows the lat a bit. I really like this tobacco once in a while, not an everyday smoke. Smooth and creamy smoke. It is just relatively strong when compared to most lat blends. While it lacks the subtle complexity of Esoterica's "Penzance," PK delivers a lovely, creamy, cool smoke that leaves amazing flavors on the palate. This mixture is now on my favourites list. The rest will be put to good use bolstering other blends. Highly recommended if you like coffee with your pipes. Surprisingly to me with such a stated high content of Latakia, mild enough to start at day break and end the evening winds. Given the simplicity of its composition, one might think, a priori, that it is easily imitable, and yet, in my opinion, it has its own personality, something that I highly value in a tobacco, since some blends are like "deja vu" of others, but this does not happen with Pirate Kake. Nevertheless it is a smooth blend. Pairs up well with Islay scotches. It doesn't bite me any, regardless of my technique, it's just a very comfortable smoke. Unlike Cornell and Diehls Tuggle Hall which you have to keep re-stuffing back in there. It smokes cool right of the tin. The pirates have commandeered and taken up residence in my pipe. And I would recommend it smoked with a dark beer. Tobacco. A velvety, and almost full bodied, smoke with a strong taste of Latakia-woodiness, thats perfectly balanced by the creamy sweet, buttery burley and cavendish. Great aroma. After having Covid in January, I discovered some of my olfactory senses didn't completely return for certain things. If there were negative stars, Pirate Kake would earn them. A very enjoyable 3 stars with no complaints from me. I'm an experimenter, though, so I try all styles. Similar Blends: the body and strength are very similar to Dunhill standard mixture, but the taste is unique.. Too much Latakia??? I like something that keeps me interested through the bowl, a little evolution, a little complexity. This is an exceptional tobacco. But I knew that would probably be the case going in. I tend to think either C&D is using some very old Latakia or that this blend is not 70% Latakia. Pirate Kake is an interesting smoke, providing a full serving of Latakia. No different here except the smoke is much more rich. There are flavors of wood smoke, spices, herbs, and a slightly nutty sweetness. Where's my jug o'grog? My smokes started off pleasant enough, especially after a full meal, but the large amount of latakia slowly pummeled me. I have to have a cup or two or three of coffee (or something stronger) with a bowl of this stuff. Highly recommended to quite and cold winter nights. I just finished a sample of this that I have had for a while even though it was a pretty small sample. I had just finished some Orient Express and I noticed in the description that it was 50% Pirate Kake and 50% Odessa. I can hardly wait to see how this tastes a couple of years down the road. I enjoy a good Balkan or English blend, but not this much Latakia. Having not tried many C & D products, after meeting them and sampling PK and a few others, I'm now a fan. Be prepared to be shunned! This is a nice cake, black in appearance, smelled smokey and robust. Copious amounts of latakia doubtful you'll taste much of anything else. I usually cut it like I would a plug. Go figure. Pirate Kake starts very spicy with pine smoke and leather flavors and supports only a minimum of sweetness. This leaves my mouth feeling bitten for a day or two afterwards. It has a similar effect of a good Sichuan pepper, a bit of a tingling sensation on the palate. A great value in bulk . The tobacco seems dry enough when being rubbed out but is hard to keep lit without drying. Perfect flavor & strength. I will keep the 2 lbs. And at $25 a pound this is a marvel of modern, um. When I first got back into smoking pipes, a local cigar shop was getting rid of the pipe products he had - apparently not enough pipes smokers in the area. Right now I have it blended 50/50 with Prince Albert which mellows the smokiness a little. The smell in the package is very bold and the taste is so bad. It's smooth as butter on the retro. Midday and your palate could be shot for quite awhile, perhaps until tomorrow or the day after. Deep dark, heavy, full bodied, musky, smoky and earthy are just a few of the terms that describe this C&D blend. And the bricks were pretty cool, I must say. I tend to prefer it more in a condimental sense. Because of the high concentration of lat, this blend is very smooth and leathery with campfire notes galore. Captain James Earle first took to sea . Pipe Used: A bunch because it's a go to blend for me. I would never have purchased this by just reading the 75 % Latakia, but trying this in the sampler was a very nice surprise! If you're looking for a delicious lat bomb then PK is your blend, but if you're looking for a lat bomb with a stronger Turkish presence I highly recommend Star of the East Flake. Just cut or tear off a piece, then rub it out and fill your bowl as usual. Even then it's a very nice smoke. Lataika bomb. Being a Pirate Kake fan I'm starting to love some of the Captain Earle's offerings more and more. The taste of salted leather. I think Craig Tarler must have been some kind of wizard to pull this off. So well named? Enjoy! C&D managed to hit a very nice flavor note! I like Burley tobaccos as well, I just don't think this blend uses it well. I can't help but wonder if it was named as an ode to seafaring rapscallions, or as a metaphor to the fact that you will find yourself digging for flavor treasures while enjoying a bowlful.
